I understand the ironic juxtaposition this author is trying to highlight, but this is horrible advice and it's honestly remarkable how irresponsible this piece is. Now is not the time to get cute, to attempt to trick captors, or gather intel.

REFUSE TO SPEAK AND DEMAND A LAWYER. https://twitter.com/mattbaume/status/1285284537711222784
The Stranger should pull this piece and print a serious correction. One of two things is true: There is a legitimate fear of being grabbed off the streets by federal agents, in which case this piece is irresponsible. Or the fear is not legitimate and this piece is unnecessary.
This "update" is wildly insufficient. This isn't something reasonable people disagree on. It is widely understood that you should not speak to law enforcement, particularly federal agents, at all. You should demand a lawyer and that is all. They need to take this more seriously.
The more I think about this "update", the more frustrated I get. The editor was like, "it's fine, we'll just print an update about how actual experts advise the exact opposite of what is in this article, and that'll be fine."

Take the L. Pull the article. Print a better one.
At some point an editor at The Stranger saw one of those videos of people being kidnapped off the streets by unidentified military officers, and thought "This is a crisis. Let's find a freelance writer to summarize a pamphlet from the FBI, and make sure he's not a lawyer!"
Oh look! Here's an actual expert.
