So for those who don’t understand what’s happened in Spain, I’m gonna try and explain in the simplest way possible

This is the story of Deportivo La Coruña vs CD Fuenlabrada
So tonight is the last day of the La Liga Smartbank, the second division of Spanish Football, and there’s one stand out game that has just been postponed including two teams in surreal circumstances
Firstly, Depor are one of Spain’s biggest, most well known teams. Won the league in the 99/00 for the only time and challenged for the league title seaons after. They won the Copa Del Rey in 02 and reached the QF in the UCL in 01, losing to Leeds, and the SF in 04 against Porto
Since then it’s gone a bit downhill, and right now, they’re sitting 20th out of 22, facing relegation to the Segunda B, which is third division regionalised football. The owner has lead them to this position and no team this big should be at risk like they are
Fuenlabrada on the other hand are living the dream. They won promotion to La Liga Smartbank last season and in there first season, they’re up there with the best, sitting 6th in the playoffs. They’ve massively overperformed and are living the dream
Today these two teams were meant to be playing eachother. If Fuenla win, it’s playoffs with a chance to go up to La Liga and face the likes of Real, Barca, Atleti amongst some. Even a point would be enough if results go there way
Depor need a win or they will be facing the likes of Internacional de Madrid, RC Ferrol, Coruxo FC, La Rozas and the academies of Real, Atletí, Getafe, Oviedo, Sporting Gijon amongst some
So 20 minutes before kickoff, La Liga announce that this colossal game that could change the fortunes for the good or bad for these teams, would be postponed, citing that Fuenlabrada have certain players who are COVID positive
You might think that this is the normality. It’s the right decision. But in spain, every team with something to play for has to kick off at the same time and start the second half at the same time so none of the games can be fixed during the games and to provide and exiting end
to the season. But La Liga didn’t postponed any of the games that directly affect Depor’s and Fuenla’s chances of relegation and promotion directly. Fans are pissed off, because now Depor can go down without any say and citing this this is unfair for the integrity of La Liga
This has potentially relegated a team who only 20 years ago won La Liga and thought with European titans. It’s insanity, pure insanity

I will deffo update this as and when results come through, because this is insane
HALF TIME

As it stands over in Spain, Fuenla have a playoff spot regardless of the result against Depor, with Elche and Vallecano dropping points. On the other hand, Depor need a win and nothing but a win to survive
With Numancia and Albacete getting results they need, it’ll leave them 2 points ahead of Depor if it stays like how it has done.

Meaning Fuenla will have nothing to play for and Depor needing a win or nothing
If results stay this way and Depor go and easily beat Fuenla, it wouldn’t suprise me if there was some sort of fix going on. There’s a reason why these final games are all played at the same time. This is just batshit crazy

Now. This is concerning, as one of the comments say, this is very irresponsible by the club, imagine how many people in the hotels, local environment have now been in contact with said virus. This is a massive fuck up and easily preventable by Fuenla
BUUUUUUUUUT, in my opinion, this was handled awfully by FEF and La Liga. Firstly, why aren’t these players being checked just before they travel? Why were they allowed to travel to A Coruña without a pre flight check? It should be standard for a profesional league
Secondly, why was this only announced 20 minutes before the game was gonna kick off. La Liga’s statement said “to save the integrity of the league” which is bullshit btw, this could open up the possibility of a fixed game to get to the playoffs, with Fuenla knowing what they need
Speaking of playoffs, what now? That was meant to start this week, now they need the 2 week mandatory isolation time before they go again, how can Elche mentally prepare for a playoff game that might not even happen?
This whole situation is a mess. Like this is a massive fucked up situation. Tebas blaming Fuenla, Fuenla saying that no one had symptoms, Depor now relegated, and going to open a legal battle. Something doesn’t add up here...
Whatever happens, I’ll try update this as much as possible so people can see what’s happened cause, this is something else man

If I’m reading correct, apparently other captains of clubs were in agreement with Depor to postpone the day to plane player at a later and fair date, but La Liga didn’t take notice and just postponed their game
Depor also said that the outcome of yesterday’s results aren’t valid in there eyes as they say that the competition should have been completed on equal terms.

From what I’ve read, they had tests on Saturday Sunday, and Monday (which contradicts my previous statement which I apologise for) with Fuenla only finding out about the results whilst in A Coruña. They said they followe all protocol set by La Liga, whilst in and around
the hotel in A Coruña. They also thank La Liga for the support in the severity of the matter yet slate certain sporting institutions which is interesting. They also say that they believe none of there players behaved out of behaviour pre travelling

Español (hear me out) are calling for no promotion or relegation from the top two divisions (told you) as they say the season has been derailed by exceptional circumstances, meaning it’ll be unfair for said teams to be punished
More COVID cases have been found in Almeria’s team I believe, and Elche will call for legal action if the game goes ahead and they don’t get the final play off spot. Make sense?
