I know this is less popular, but as a collector of mental illnesses I'm getting kind of bored with the whole "mental illnesses don't make you mean/are not an excuse" discussion. I would much rather focus on conversations about how people's behavior (mentally ill or not)
is often unpredictable, and how do we make sure that we are creating systems of accountability and care that also hold space for people's various trauma.
Like yes, certain mental illnesses are heavily stigmatized, and I dont think we beat that stigma by pretending that our illnesses do not have ANY impact on how we relate to people.
I think instead, we question why different behavior is deemed as grounds for disposal (by incarceration), or loss of community. I *KNOW* myself when I am unmedicated.
I am not a kind friend, or a good comrade, despite any personal efforts I may make in therapy, etc. That is not me making excuses, that is me naming a fact *for K* Does that make me any less worthy of love and support and access to my healthcare needs? No.
