I know this is less popular, but as a collector of mental illnesses I& #39;m getting kind of bored with the whole "mental illnesses don& #39;t make you mean/are not an excuse" discussion. I would much rather focus on conversations about how people& #39;s behavior (mentally ill or not)
is often unpredictable, and how do we make sure that we are creating systems of accountability and care that also hold space for people& #39;s various trauma.
Like yes, certain mental illnesses are heavily stigmatized, and I dont think we beat that stigma by pretending that our illnesses do not have ANY impact on how we relate to people.
I think instead, we question why different behavior is deemed as grounds for disposal (by incarceration), or loss of community. I *KNOW* myself when I am unmedicated.
I am not a kind friend, or a good comrade, despite any personal efforts I may make in therapy, etc. That is not me making excuses, that is me naming a fact *for K* Does that make me any less worthy of love and support and access to my healthcare needs? No.
