Virtsu-Rapla narrow gauge railway was 96 km long, it opened in December 1931 and functioned until May 1968. My father and grandfather travelled there by train; I cycled.
And here a collection of old station buildings - some in villages, some in the middle of nowhere, some well renovated, some in disrepair.
This is former railroad workers’ house in Koikse
Pühatu station
Märjamaa - workers’ accommodation and station next door
Paeküla station
Vigala - station and two buildings for workers
Rumba station. Not in good condition...
Rootsi station - being renovated by a lovely young couple. Architecture mirrors that of Rumba
Only some trees and a hidden cellar left of the Kirbla station
Lihula - distinctive workers’ house, but station could be mistaken for a Soviet apartment block, if not for some telltale details
Tuudi. Maybe the best-renovated of all - but quite empty...
Karuse is pure pleasure. Renovated with heart and style; works as B&B - highly recommended!
And we have arrived: this is Virtsu. The actual station perished in 1944, but much of the related infrastructure is still very much there.
