I see a much slander & misconception involving Eren’s current character in the AoT manga, especially surrounding his shift in motives/worldview. Eren isn’t acting out of hatred or a desire for revenge, but rather to protect the two things he values most: his loved ones & freedom
This scene is when we first see “the new Eren”. This is when reality really stars to dawn on him, and a major shift in his character begins. He’s not excited about achieving his goal, or burning with rage and excitement. He’s sorrowful, melancholy, and burdened.
The old Eren would have a fire in his eyes, ready to slaughter the “monsters” who stole his freedom and killed his comrades. However, he’s had an epiphany: his enemies are not monsters, and they’re not pure evil. They’re flawed, confused, human beings.
Next we see Eren, he’s in Marley. Here he meets someone who reinforces what he already knows to be true. He encounters the “good” on the other side of the ocean, & understands what the warriors once had to learn: that there are good and bad people on both sides of a conflict.
This leads into his encounter with Reiner, during which Falco realizes Eren’s true identity. Eren is not pleased with himself, he’s not celebrating outwitting his enemy. He’s suffering, exhausted from what he knows is the beginning to bringing torment upon genuinely good people
At this point Isayama makes it perfectly clear that the Eren who saw the world in terms of black and white is long gone. These people killed his mother, betrayed him, and oppressed his country for centuries, yet he feels genuine empathy, knowing this was forced upon them.
Revenge is of no importance to Eren at this point; he finally recognizes that Ymir was right, that all of his ranting and preaching about revenge and payback were nothing but the words of a ignorant child who had no understanding of the world.
This is Eren’s fresh, informed worldview. Beforehand, he had no room for naunce in his approach, thus making his current mindset a complete 180 from where he was before the timeskip. This is all displayed in the confused reactions of Reiner during their conversation.
Next we have Willy Tybur, using some rehtoric that parallels how Eren felt about the Warriors a few years ago. As you can tell by his expression, he is not enraged or irate, but despairing. He’s hurting for the people of Paradis, as well as the ignorant world.
If you needed any more convincing, a flashback that appears in the later chapters of the AoT manga, once again, shows his sorrow for the people of the world. He knows that boy could’ve easily been him, and sheds a tear for all others like him.
So, then the question becomes, “why the rumbling?” It’s true that he’s no longer driven by hatred, but his goal has not changed. As I stated when the thread began, Eren has always cherished his freedom and loved ones above all else.
Based on his own values, he has no other options. If he takes Zeke’s method, not only will the Eldians lose their freedom, but Historia and his other comrades will die as they inherit his titan.
If he takes Hange’s method of diplomacy (which they’ve already attempted and made no progress), the island will either be wiped out by the rest of the world, or, once again, the freedom of Paradis will be built upon the corpses of his loved ones.
To wrap this up, Eren doesn’t romanticize the rumbling; he’s already seen the scenery of it through future memories. He‘s doing what he feels as though he must to save those he loves, & to protect the rights of his people, who have been oppressed and slaughtered for 100s of yrs.
And that’s my thread, hope you guys liked it! The point of this is not to say Eren is right for using the rumbling, but to shed some more light on his perspective and motives going into these final chapters.
