everyone i speak to in #academia seems outrageously stressed, many on the verge of, or intermittently, crying because of the workload

our problem is that we all have (too much) pride in our work & feel a moral obligation to not let any1 down 1/11
#AcademicTwitter #BrokenAcademia
we know refusing work (or taking time off sick) means our office mate will get lumped with it, our line manager and good friend will look bad or be put in a difficult position. we know they would understand, but we also feel that's unfair 2/11
and this is exactly why #universities can get away with their ridiculous workload ideas. our good will and drive is exploited.

iv heard several people across the UK be told to prep for face-to-face, blended, AND online teaching "just in case". 3/11
but also remember to use your annual leave. and online yoga. look after your #mentalhealth. now's also a good time for papers actually. yeah, WRITE PAPERS! (actual email from @aberdeenuni, albeit ill-thought-out rather than intentionally malicious) 4/11
in my very-easy-to-say-as-an-outsider-looking-in opinion, we need to rekindle the #ucustrike spirit and collectively say NO. if you don't have time to prep a lecture, turn up to class and explain to the students what happened. don't cover for colleagues. 5/11
work to contract - THIS SHOULDN'T BE AN INDUSTRIAL ACTION THREAT! if everyone does this, uni's will legitimately be screwed.

there's added bonuses too.

#universities have culled the bulk of their casualised staff. you refusing work gives us lot a job 6/11
considering most people work between 1.3-1.6 FTE, there's ample sway for us casuals to bargain a proper contract IF WE ALSO STICK TOGETHER AND ALL DON'T JUST ACCEPT WHATEVER SHITTY CONTRACT THE UNI THROWS AT US. 7/11
this is particularly important because certain groups (e.g. women and Black folk) get lumped disproportionately with the shittiest deal, so by all *only* accepting something worthwhile, we help create a more equitable #university. 8/11
finally, remember our pay has lost nearly 20 % value in the last decade alone. now many #universities are asking staff to forgo promotions, and/or take a pay cut, whilst removing YOUR support staff, and INCREASING your workload. 9/11
THEY DO NOT VALUE YOU. why would you bust your ass to make them successful in return for a pay cut, more work, and worsening #mentalhealth?

line managers, heads of schools etc, some of this is on you as the leader and representative of YOUR staff. 10/11
its heartbreaking hearing so many friends struggle unnecessarily

my only other suggestion is mass resignation. the pay aint great but ample opportunity to work on things😝

thanks for listening to my inspirational but ultimately pointless talk

now go forth & be mediocre 11/11
