To mark the anniversary of #Apollo11's landing, here's a thread of my favourite mission pictures! I'll be adding to it throughout the day, but let's start with a classic: the LM Eagle silhouetted on the Moon's surface just after landing.
My favourite pictures are the imperfect ones, the ones that aren't framed well because they remind you a real human took the picture. Here's another post-landing with the LM's thruster in the foreground. Love that reminder that the photographer was in a spacecraft! #Apollo11
I don't think I've ever shared this one but I LOVE IT! The tiny Earth seen over a chunk of what I think is the LM? This pics spot in the magazine suggest it's an LM roll of film. This was taken after the landing as Neil and Buzz went to rejoin Mike in the CSM. #Apollo11
Another shot taken in lunar orbit after #Apollo11 landed on the Moon. Earthrise with a healthy amount of LM ascent stage thruster in the foreground, and of course the lunar horizon!
A less oftern seen candid of @TheRealBuzz in the LM Eagle after #Apollo11's lunar EVA.
Another shot of @TheRealBuzz looking over his shoulder out the LM Eagle's window, somtimes post-EVA. This almost feels like it could be an album cover! #Apollo11
The Eagle upsidedown (relative to Mike Collins taking the pic in the CSM) after separation and before landing on the Moon. Yeah, it's not the best shot, but you guys know I have a thing for imperfect framing and windowsils. Makes them feel human and real! #Apollo11
Earthrise from #Apollo11! Judging by where this is in the magazine, this is a shot @AstroMCollins took from the CSM just after separation with the Lunar Module.
Post lunar landing, here's #Apollo11's LM ascent stage coming up for rendezvous with the CSM. I LOVE pictures like this that give you a sense of size... the LM is so small and so far away. To me, it begins to capture how alone the crew was on that flight.
