i decided to look more into dr seuss’ racist past and found out some questionable things. ppl, especially me before reading this, would argue that “seuss isn’t THAT racist! he at least apologized” which, while tries to be motivational, still sweeps it—

—under the rug and doesn’t acknowledge seuss’ questionable choices within his work. one of the things the article doesn’t note is that he once made racist comic strips abt the japanese internment camps. there are..A Lot of these

now ppl would ignore this and say this isn’t part of his usual work, yet they refuse to acknowledge that he still wrote these. he DREW them. they inspired propaganda against a race that was dying in the hands of xenophobic racists. japanese wasn’t his only target
these were all roughly published in 1930-1942 during WW2, so u can get the idea of what inspired these comics. becus i’m white, i can’t defend nor take dr seuss’ apology for his work during this period, but imho it’s better to acknowledge ur past and work for a better future
and while i wish he wasn’t like this and was instead the person we all idolized as kids, it’s important we look into this and evaluate the damages he potentially caused during this period
here’s the article in case you’re interested. and while we’re at it: if ur white and decide to accept dr seuss’ apology, this thread isn’t for you. this isn’t meant to make seuss out to be a flawless person, he’s more than flawed, and it’s important we know abt that
if there’s anything i’m missing from this (trigger/content warnings, any info u want to show me relating to this), PLEASE let me know and i’ll be more aware in the future, and can hopefully educate ppl like myself
