This is picture is from San Basilio de Palenque. Palenque is special because it is the first free black town in the Americas!!! It was founded by the African king, Benkos Biohó in 1603!! The people here speak a mixture of Bantu and Spanish called Palenquero.
This is a statue of Benkos Biohió who escaped captivity to create a free environment for runaway slaves. He created an army of slaves to protect the community and to help free more slaves to bring back to his community. He was later betrayed in 1619 by the Spanish after they
Violated a peace treaty they had previously made in 1612. It is said that when the Spanish captured him he was walking into cartegenia to exchange his life for the lives of some of his people but when he walked into the city he saw that the prisoners had been already shot!!!
The Spanish quickly arrested him where he stood and later called for is execution. He was hanged to death and later quartered as a way to discourage more slaves from rising up
This is a mural in Cartagena, Colombia it is called “Las Tres Guerreras” and its by the artist Fin DAC.
This is also in Palenque and it’s a welcome song and dance performed for visitors to the town
