The first paper of my Ph.D. is now up for discussion in @EGU_TC! Our @NASA_ICE and @Mass2Ant team use a state-of-the-art snow model, SNOWPACK @WSL_research , to simulate snow and firn density across Antarctica @CUBoulderATOC @lenaertsjan @DrBrookeMedley @PKuipersMunneke

We demonstrate high quality simulated density without explicitly tuning to observations

Because our model is not tuned, it’s performance does not degrade in sparsely observed regions and could thus aid in interpreting satellite altimetry e.g. @NASA_ICESat2 and @esa_cryosat (photo: Thore Kausch)

Furthermore, we present model evidence of annual surface density variability of up to 16%, suggesting that not only do models need to resolve variability in space, but also in time!
