I've previously compared the Lucas saga--or at least Lucas's approach to his saga--to a big clock where every piece connects to some other piece and they all interact in intentional ways. TLJ is very much apart from that but in and of itself it functions the same way.

TLJ is like a ladder from Point A to Point B and if you take a rung out of the ladder you can't get where Johnson wants you to go. Could the rungs have been built differently? Sure, there are always other options. But what you can't do is just chop one off because it's less epic.
