the whole chorus is the heartbreaking reality of giving everything you are to someone and being completely vulnerable to them but getting little in return, louis still loves this person but is struggling because no matter what he does this person just +

becomes more and more closed off. the next verse follows this up as he talks about the person pretending to be strong but he can see right through it and can tell that they're struggling but refuse to be vulnerable around him, making him feel helpless

when in reality it's consuming him entirely, he doesn't want to leave this person, he just wants to finally be loved and be in a relationship with open communication

overall, this song to me shows elements of codependency with louis being completely consumed and infatuated with this person despite the pain they're causing him.

it also discusses the topic of feeling like you're not doing enough to help, louis clearly feels completely helpless because he can't help when they're 'lost in their pride' and just wants to do anything he can to help

louis feels as though the relationship is one sided but doesn't know how to express this to them, he's sick of being the only one who opens up and shows his vulnerable side
