Saw folks on a thread about Kanye saying they couldn’t sympathize w him being bipolar bc he can afford treatment. This mindset is dangerous & ableist. It ignores that not taking meds is a symptom of BP & that you often have to change meds even if you do take them. 1/
The process of changing meds bc your body starts reacting differently can take ages w lots of misses as you try to find the right one. Also, you might have difficulties getting the right therapist for you.
Of course the whole thing is ridiculous bc healthcare, including mental healthcare, should be free. But even as it is, even the richest people still can experience mental illness just like the rest of us 3/
It doesn’t mean that he isn’t saying horrible things or that he can’t be held accountable (he should be.) But don’t conflate wealth with somehow being able to overcome a lifelong mental illness. That’s not how that works. 4/
I had to change my BP meds during 1L bc the one I was on, which was the 1st I’d ever liked, was giving me twitches. It was awful. You never know why someone has to change their treatment plan. 5/
You can & should hold people accountable even if they have mental illness, but don’t think that even the most resources in the world can just magic it away. Last/
