So much of the endless "free speech" debate is people who identify as liberals gradually realizing they agree more with their nominal foes on the right than they would care to admit.

If the backlash to an op-ed calling for US troops to carry out war crimes against unarmed citizens is what turns you into a Trump supporter, then your value-based commitments to the liberal/left were already pretty attenuated!

So part of this all is that we're being subjected to the psychodrama of the moderate/centrist's self-discovery. But the other part is just grift—continuous with how center-right columnists write as "would-be" liberals who need to accommodated with more center-right policies....

...lest they drift further to the right.
