June 1827, #AnneLister spends a full day taking in the sights of Nancy, France with Maria Barlow. #AnneListerCodeBreaker
"we crossed the river – fell asleep till we came in sight of Nancy Cathedral – got out at the bureau at Nancy."
"about 5 ½ had each of us a basin of boiled milk and a pain au lait – excellent milk – a little after 6 came to my room – took off my pelisse – made myself tolerably comfortable – dressed – agreed to see the lions first then go to bed"
"out at about 7 ¾ – to the Place Royale very handsome"
"saw the theatre a very pretty one – the boxes forming an ellipse – should have seen the museum and library but the
concierge not there and we were anxious not to miss the fête dieu at 9 at the cathedrale"
"from the Place Royale to the Place La Carrière here is the palace or governing house – very handsome front, very nice garden at the back..."
"...which as well as the place open into the belle promenade de la Pépinière d’une bonne heure ou d’une bonne heure et demie – It must go almost all round the city – very pleasant and shady this morning"
"From the Place La Carrière went along the old ducal palace to the Chapelle Ducale, commonly called La Chapelle Ronde but properly the church of the Cordeliers"
"here in a beautiful domed chapel to the North is the mausoleum of the old dukes of Lorraine – black marble sarcophagi and pillars – the rest white stone – was white marble before destroyed in the revolution and
therefore more magnificent than now – but remarkably handsome now"
"hence to the citadel"
"then along the promenade de la Pépinière to the Place La Carrière and thence direct to the cathedrale"
"and at 9 got places in the organ loft – saw the finale of the grand military mass and the whole preparation for the procession of the fête dieu"
"one repose of the host was enough for us and we went along the Faubourg de St Pierre to the church of Notre Dame de Bon Secours to see the mausoleum of Stanislaus, and opposite to him, of his wife Catherina Poliska or Polisca (I think the former spelling). Very pretty church"
"In returning thro’ the Place Marché bought cherries pretty good at 4d per lb and as many strawberries such as we buy... in Paris for 6d as we pay her 1/ for – bought strawberries and cherries – got home about or soon after 11, and had boiled milk again with our fruit"
The Place Charles III, formerly Place Henri Mengin, was more commonly called Place Marché. A covered market now stands opposite the square selling the best regional produce.
