A problem with journalism as a ‘profession’ (which implies opportunities for advancement) is that where in every other aspect of my working life the division is between management who earn shitloads and workers who earn peanuts . . .
in journalism we see other journalists earning insane amounts of money for essentially doing what we all do - writing to word counts and deadlines.
They’re doing nothing that we can’t do, but because they went to the right school, have the right parents and friends etc they can make a(nother) living out of this. These thriving writers are nearly always white and middle/upper class and from London.
Managerial idiocy is depressing but the fact that say, Boris Johnson gets over a quarter of a million quid a year for writing about twenty columns while most of us continue to write for miserly wordrates is even more dispiriting.
As with other pay disparities ‘it was ever thus’ is what we say to console ourselves. But if you’re old, not posh, not friends with the rich, FORGET about being given a space or a voice.
Journalism would rather give a ‘name’ an enormous wodge than encourage new writers with new perspectives.

I wouldn’t expect the media to talk about this. According to the UK press, there is inequality everywhere except in the media.
