THREAD: With the squad enjoying promotion in the two days leading up to yesterday’s game, we saw Bielsa make 7 changes to the side that beat Barnsley including Ian Poveda making his first start for the club. #LUFC
Starting on the right wing, it was the first real chance for Poveda to show case his talent and show why despite being the age of 20, he’s already been on the books of Barcelona and Manchester City (Heatmap via SofaScore).
The first thing that stood out right from the off was his willingness to want the ball. He was constantly on the move looking to run in behind or come short and pick up the ball deep.
A lot of the time his runs weren’t found which was disappointing but this was probably down to players not quite being on the same wave length, which will take some time and more games together. A good example of this below.
When he did receive the ball, his use of it was very good. He created 2 chances and finished the game with a 82.4% pass accuracy. He was involved in the build up to Pablo's goal and provided a number of great passes.
As well providing some key passes, Ian was positive with the ball. Every time he got the ball he wanted to either look forward or take on his man. His close control and quick feet is certainly one of his best attributes.
Despite only being small and slight, his ability to use his low centre of gravity and not get knocked off the ball was surprisingly good. He will be looking to continue to bulk up and do his gym work but the early signs are encouraging.
It’s mighty important that in a Bielsa team that you work hard off the ball. With him coming from City where he trained with the first team, this is something he’s familiar with and does well, as you can see from the example below.
He did get a sight of goal in the first half but unfortunately was offside. At time he didn’t know this and finished really well into the top corner on his left foot. He does have a decent goal scoring record for England at various youth levels.
Overall it was a really bright performance for Ian Poveda. He showed a positive attitude and looked like he was starting to learn the system. I for one is looking forward to seeing more of him.
Leeds are on a wave and I am too so retweet away👀
