Joaquin Guzman was called "El Chapo" because of his stature and "El Rapido" because of the swift way he handles things. El Chapo was born and raised in Sinaloa, Mexico, a place notorious for breeding powerful drug traffickers.

During his days as the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, El Chapo developed creative smuggling ways, which included building air-conditioned tunnels under the Mexico-U.S. border, stuffing drugs in chili pepper cans and fire extinguishers, and also catapulting drugs over the border.

In 1993, he was arrested and extradited to Mexico where he was tried and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment, but because he had the money, he gave out bribes which allowed him to continue managing his criminal organisation.

He became the head of the cartel in 1995 while in prison, and in 2001, he escaped from prison, of course, with bribes to the right people. Forbes in 2009 estimated the annual revenue of his cartel to be $3 billion.

In 2004, the US placed a $5million bounty on him. After years of bloodshed from drug traffickers and the Mexican army which proved abortive, he was later arrested in Mexico, by US DEA in 2014.

El Chapo in July, 2015 escaped custody through a long tunnel dug beneath the shower of his cell to his house, the tunnel had lightning and ventilation indicating it had been running. This was a huge blow on the President who had earlier made El Chapo's capture a key triumph.

January, 2016, El Chapo was captured in his hometown after a shootout and was extradited to the US in the following year where he was charged with various crimes you could think of.

He later began trial in November 2018 amidst tense security and in February 2019, he was found guilty of all charges and five months later, he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
