prod suga appreciation of the day: honsool (a fairly technical thread)
would like to start off by saying yoongi hasnt confirmed much of anything abt honsool’s production beyond the creepy vibe he was going for so most of this is my speculation (combined w others ive seen) based on my knowledge of music prod/recreating some sounds + structure myself!
its common knowledge that this song centers around drinking alone as yg contemplates what his life has become. so much of the production reflects a feeling of being drunk and there are lots of decisions he made that i feel relate directly to that idea beginning w this
a LOT of that feeling also comes from creative use of percussion + panning (if you don’t know, panning is essentially whether you hear something in the right headphone/left headphone/center) and this is my FAVE PART of the production
ex: the church bell sound you hear in the chorus/bridge begins left and repeatedly rotates L -> R -> Center in a perfect circle - i feel like this is to mimic the room spinning when you’re drunk. the hi hat pattern is also ALL OVER THE PLACE, not in consistency but in location
the hi hat is panned like crazy and not just hard left/hard right, he varies the amount it’s panned left/right (so it’ll be fully left then SLIGHTLY right then 50% right etc) and there is literally no intuitive pattern. this adds this kinda chaotic slightly off balance element
the last piece of the percussion is the claps, they vary from being a bit loud/reflective to being super dampened, and it comes across to me as representing how your senses are dulled when drunk. there’s a lot to be said abt all of it but ill leave that here
similar to the hi hats, yoongi uses a stereo delay on one of the bg sounds in verses (this basically makes the sound bounce back and forth from right to left earphone) and the way he used it seemed like it had no real rhyme/reason, another way to create a sense of imbalance
last thing ill mention: he adds that vocal loop he uses in the beginning back in at a lower volume during the chorus/bridge n it legit makes it feel like ur underwater. u know when ur that type of drunk where ur ears start ringing + u sit w ur head in ur hands. exactly like that
all this to say that the reason you listen to honsool and it FEELS reminiscent of inebriation is because nearly EVERY ELEMENT OF IT has some kind of effect meant specifically to recreate it and that is SO FUCKING COOL to me
anyways now that you’re armed with knowledge listen to honsool headphones on to bring yourself one step closer to god https://open.spotify.com/track/5Ncjypx5upZS5ZZTaqUzIf?si=b6z3JS3VRPOT3LFEvAEdlg
