Preliminary indications are that the husband answered the door and was shot multiple times; the son came running to the door and was shot as well before the gunman fled, the sources said.

Judge Salas was believed to be in the basement at the time of the shooting.
Salas, a judge of the U.S. District Court for New Jersey in Newark, has been in her seat for nine years. Before that she spent five years as a magistrate judge, and nine years prior to that as a federal public defender.
She is the first Hispanic woman to serve on the federal bench in New Jersey.

Salas has presided over a number of high-profile trials in her tenure, including the trial of former "Real Housewife" Teresa Giudice.
Her husband, Mark Anderl, is a well-regarded criminal defense attorney.

The FBI, U.S. Marshals, New Jersey State Police and the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General all have personnel on scene investigating.
Daniel Anderl, her 20-year-old son, has died.

Her husband, Mark Anderl, 63, a criminal defense attorney and former Assistant Essex County Prosecutor, is in critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick.
Strange coincidence: Judge Salas was given the Deutsche Bank/Epstein case on July 15th.
The gunman, dressed as a FedEx driver entered their North Brunswick home, per the New Jersey Globe 🧐
The suspect remains at large.

Though it was not immediately clear who the target of the shooting was, Judge Salas had been the target of threats

FTR: I’m not jumping to conclusions re: shooting. Strange, yes. Heartbreaking, absolutely. I’d like to wait for more details.
Federal judges are frequent targets of threats.

Earlier this year, CNN cited Marshals Service data that showed that the 2,700-member federal judiciary received nearly 4,500 threats or “inappropriate communications” in 2019.
Salas has also handled cases involving members of the Grape Street Crips, in connection w a long-running drug-trafficking network that was taken down by the FBI in 2015. She was also the judge who sent RHONJ stars Joe and Teresa Giudice to prison. https://www.nj.com/middlesex/2020/07/husband-son-of-federal-judge-shot-at-their-nj-home-sources-say.html
