So an email went out to a large palaeo-based mailing list about a recent palaeo documentary with some criticisms. I’ve heard a few criticisms about it, so I read on. 1/n

Having not seen the show yet, I was interested. There were a few comments about things not being realistic, fine.
But the main complaint was that there was “a complete lack of men”, it was “patently bigoted”, and that “men are completely sidelined in the entire show”. Oh? 2/n

That seemed odd to me, but my instant thought was “awesome, it’s a show that features women”! A few emails have come through calling this person out, and denying it, but I will decide to watch it and see.
Sadly I can only see episodes 2 and 3, and I couldn’t see episode 1. 3/n

So I watch episode 2, and the count of interviewees? 10 men, 4 women. Episode 3, you ask? 8 men, 7 women.

Oh yes, another complaint was that the “constant giggling and smiling” from the host and the other women was apparently reinforcing negative stereotypes. Apparently we are not allowed to have fun. Completely unacceptable. 5/n
For the record, I saw men giggle, laugh, do a little dance, and heaven forbid they even smiled (I’m looking at you @DavidEvans_ROM, how dare you smile). But I guess it’s ok when they do it?

If this is the kind of show they won’t show their grandkids, I have no idea what kind of show is acceptable. I am so perturbed by this whole thing.

Also for the record, I enjoyed the show. Was it perfect? No. But I learned some things and enjoyed new perspectives. It was nice to see new faces for once.
I gave in and replied. Just with the numbers. Let’s see what happens...
Apparently I used “statistics to lie”. And I “conveniently” didn’t watch the only episode they watched. I would love to so I could further prove them wrong, but sadly I can’t find it anywhere online. Le sigh.
