I would not be an AT if had not been a PT who introduced me to the thought of becoming and AT. I have Osterogenisis Imperfecta (brittle bone disease). I grew up in a small West Texas town (36 in my graduating class). Had 27 major Fxs by the time I was 15

These included 5 femur Fxs (4-Left, 1-Right). By the time I was 14 my left leg was 3” shorter than right. I was in a wheelchair from 6th grade until the end of my Jr. year. It was a horrible time in my life. On July 13, 1990, my story would begin to change....

I had my first osteotomy on Friday the 13th. A Sofield-Millar procedure (shish-kebab) of my left femur realigned the malformation and provided some extra length to makeup of the leg length difference. A year later I would have a second osteotomy. #PTATLove

2nd Surgery was a Supracondylar Osteotomy of Right Valgus Knee, July 12, 1991. A year after the first. It was now time to get to work with rehab. Thats when I met the best PT I ever had and I would be challenged over the next 13 months. #PTATLove

Barry was the best! Exactly what I needed at this time in my life. I had many PTs before, but he invested in me, the patient, the mentally weak and terrified teenager who had contemplated hurting myself many times. But was found valuable to Barry and loved. #PTATLove

Barry approached my therapy sessions from the holistic perspective. We would start out doing a mental exercise, physical exercise and then he would encourage me to explore my spirit and discover what that meant for me. Each session was more and more challenging. #PTATLove

One day he asked me about my dreams. I want to be an orthopedic surgeon in sports medicine. You see I loved sports, played as much baseball as my body would allow until the 5th grade. And Barry knew how important sports were to my hometown. #PTATLove

Barry asked me if I knew what an Athletic Trainer was, of course I was clueless. He went on to exmplain AT and even gave me my first taping, wrapping, bracing book, written in Dutch. You see Barry was from Holland and had friends who were Physios back home. #PTATLove

Our conversation began to center around my future and how I could grow as future professional. Barry would help me learn to walk both physically and mentally towards my goals. He stirred in me a desire to care for patients as he cared for me. #PTATLove

Barry supported me when I felt there was no one who cared or even believed in me. He gave me strength to believe in myself and to overcome my fears of failure. It was Barry who encouraged me to go to Jr./Sr. Prom without my wheelchair and walking aids. #PTATLove

It was Barry, a PT who inspired this AT to be the best I could be. I took the lessons Barry gave me and I have tried to use them in my own career with patients and students. If it hadn’t been for a PT, this AT may have never been the person he was called to be. #PTATLove
