for a fandom so deeply invested in bts' music its been bothering me to see people a mix of ignorant and confused about what actually goes into making a song and the different types of roles the one can play. so here is a short thread of a simple breakdown
this thread is based on knowledge of how to read credits and my own cousin being a music producer in my country.
its understandable that most people get stuff confused especially since a lot of these terms mean different things for classical music versus mainstream music

firstly: songwriting. this one is simple enough to understand
if you write lyrics for your part or someone else's part, you will be awarded a songwriting credit. but recall that even writing a sentence or a couple words for a song will have you added to the list of songwriters, but you can usually see who's had the most input
by the order of the people credited. again this is not fail-proof but usually, this system is followed
production is the cornerstone of a song, the instrumentation, the arrangement and the overall direction of a song is in the hands of the producer, because the composition is built off of the production. let me add an example of whats different abt production and composition
here is yoongis demo track for autumn leaves. this is a produced track without any composition.
here is yoongis demo for trivia:seesaw. this is a track thats been composed on. the melodies are the biggest part of composing on a track
the same premise of credits is awarded to the production. i remember my cousin sending over a largely finished beat to one of his coworkers at his label to look over, since they have it as a policy to check each others work.
this coworker changed the source on the drums and added a cymbal sound. when you check the credits for that song now you'll see it credited as (Cousin, Coworker) even though my cousin did the vast majority of the production on that track.
just something to be aware of because bighit seem to have that same company policy with the bts members productions and having it checked over by their in-house producers, which i assume is why you'll very rarely see them credited as producer on their own.
but again its safe to assume that whenever the members are credited as producers on a song they're the ones with the largest input.
as a side note: i see a lot of people using komca to check production credits, you shouldn't do that because to my knowledge komca registers lyrics and composition. hence why you'll for example see all three of the rappers mixtapes having every track registered under
their names even when they haven't produced on the track. since they wrote the lyrics and rapped/sang, they are registered for the composition and songwriting of every track.
wikipedia actually is a good source if you're interested in production credits in particular, since they're just taken from the album booklet of credits which lists everything accurately
and finally the composition, lyrics and production are all integral parts of a song and every members participation in all of these avenues of song creation are impressive and worthy of appreciation and praise. its not easy work at all and on top of that to make it sound great
if i've missed anything or there's something anyone is curious about and want to discuss in more detail feel free to dm im always excited to talk about music
this thread is muted but let me clarify that this is a simplified and basic breakdown of these aspects of song creation and all this info is backed by my own cousins 20 year experience in the industry as a producer. dm me if you're curious about anything etc etc
