A thing I often think is missing from the uni discourse is that young people who aren& #39;t from a pretty wealthy (/academic/high cultural capital) background actually have no idea what jobs there are except the quite obvious ones
I don& #39;t think people are like & #39;oh if I do an English degree I& #39;ll earn less& #39; its much more a case of & #39;if I do an English degree I either be a teacher or I work in the call centre I currently work in after school& #39;
Things like medicine or engineering are quite obvious in terms of where it goes, but the idea that there are jobs attached to something like a history degree is not a thing at all
I think upper/upper middle class people think & #39;what am I best at& #39; and then try and get into the best uni possible knowing they& #39;ll be able to get some kind of internship in publishing or whatever, where most others think & #39;what practical thing does this qualify me for& #39;
