There seems to be a new twitter round of condescension from docs toward our nurse colleagues. Let me just say: I could not do my job without nurses, nor would I be good at doing their job. They deal with literal and figurative shit that I am not cut out to handle...
Nurses are not drones who carry out our orders. They are intelligent team members who save lives, often by catching our dumb mistakes. They juggle crashing patients and concerned family, and are at the patients’ bedsides more than we’ll ever be...
I trust nurses because they care about their patients and they know when something is wrong. It doesn’t matter if they’re a new grad or have decades of experience. TRUST NURSES. If they’re hesitant to give a med, there’s a reason.
I learned more from nurses during my training than from some of my attendings. This counts for graduate nurses, RNs, NPs, and all specialties. Medical school does not make doctors smarter than nurses. It certainly doesn’t make us more compassionate.
I’m tired of all this infighting between doctors and nurses. We’re in a pandemic and we have enough shit to deal with without turning on each other.
Now, if someone could please show me how to stop a stupid pump from beeping without messing it up and pissing off the nurse, I’d really appreciate it.
