#OTD in 1545 the #MaryRose sunk. In our collections, we hold the original warrant for two new ships in 1510, one of which was the Mary Rose, and the other the 'Peter Pomegranate'. We also have an early inventory of the ship from 1514 when the ship was briefly decommissioned (1/6)
The #MaryRose was completely re-fitted in the 1530s, probably in anticipation of conflict driven by Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon and his break from Rome. In this inventory from 1541, the Mary Rose can be seen in the last entry after her re-fit. (2/6)
The reasons for the #MaryRose's fate have often been debated by historians. . An eye-witness account reads "towards evening the ship of Vice admiral George Carew foundered, all the 500 men on board being drowned save about 25 or 30 servants, sailors and the like...." (3/6)
“… Was told by a Fleming among the survivors that when she heeled over with the wind the water entered by the lowest row of gun ports which had been left open after firing". (4/6) #MaryRose
Henry VIII immediately attempted to recover the #MaryRose. This list details some of the "things necessary for the recovery with the help of God of the Mary Roose", including "two of the greatest hulks that may be gotten" and five of the "greatest cables that may be had" (5/6).
The ships ordnance would be recovered a year and a half after the Mary Rose sank, with the Privy Council paying £20 to "a certain Italian, being a diver, undertaking the recovery of the ordnance in the Mary Rose". (6/6)
Henry's efforts to recover his ship, however, would ultimately be in vain, with the Mary Rose remaining at the bottom of the Solent for another 437 years before being recovered in 1982.
