What are successful investments that were staring you in the face but you simply overlooked?
I’ll start with $CMG. I’ve been an avid fan for ~8 years and never stopped going during the E. coli outbreak. I stood by and watched the digital experience, product options, and in-store experience improve drastically over time, but I never even thought to invest
Another is $SNAP. I’ve witnessed myself and my broader age group use Snapchat religiously for 10 years and knew the audience was not being replaced by Instagram stories. I watched the platform improve with Bitmoji, AR, and advertising but still never did anything
$LULU — when every girl in my high school carried their lunch around in a Lulu bag I should’ve known something was up. However, the show all was when all my male friends wouldn’t stop talking about ABC pants
$SPOT — I should’ve known when my friends and I all transitioned over from Apple Music due to better UI, better curated playlists, and the social aspect. The final sign was when I transitioned all my podcast listening to the app over a year ago
$SQ — my mom bought a Square ~10 years ago and absolutely loved it. Then I begun to see their POS systems in every local SMB, even the hole in the wall Mexican chain I love. Finally, I saw Cash App was miles ahead of Venmo in terms of UI / ease of use
I’ve always been a huge advocate of the Peter Lynch invest in what you know style of investing, so missing these really irks me. However, important to note I’ve caught a lot of successful trends along the way too with investments like $ROKU, $TDOC, $DIS, $MTCH
Also important to note that a lot of companies whose products I used / saw turned out to be horrible investments. I long thought about investing in $JWN, $YELP, $GRUB, $PBPB, $BBBY, and more I’m happy to have avoided!
