Long after Ravana was killed by Shri Rama & Vibhishana was crowned as the King of Sri Lanka in Treta Yuga, a young boy named Dambodbhava in Demon community wishes to attain immortality & does a very hard penance of Sun God (Lord Surya).

Impressed by his dedication, Lord Surya appears before him & wishes to ask for a boon. He requests forever youth, immense muscular strength & IMMORTALITY.

Lord Surya doesn’t oblige claiming that all living beings that are born on earth will have to die some day; so in return he asks him to cover his body with 1000 invisible golden armours, & that is not all, whoever breaks one armour dies immediately.

after attaining this boon, Dambodbhava starts wrecking havoc on society by killing sages & Kshatriyas + unsurping powerful kingdoms by killing numerous innocent warriors in the process

After being fed up of this demon who gets the popular name of Sahasrakavacha (One whose body is protected by 1000 armours),

& in order to put an end to his menace, King Prajapati Daksha (The father of Sati,wife of Lord #Shiva) gets his younger daughter named Murti married to Dharma - one of the ‘Mind’ sons of Lord Brahma

Murti gives birth to twin boys named Nara & Narayana; The twin brothers are inseparable & learn the art of warfare from Lord Parshurama & both of them enjoy praying to Lord Shiva.

Nara Challanges Sahasrakavacha for a fight & continues fighting with him for 1000 years thus breaking his 1st armour & killing himself in the process.

Just when Dambodbhava starts celebrating his victory, his brother Narayana who was praying to Lord Shiva comes near his brother’s dead body & wishpers a mantra in his ears ( Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra) which brings him to life

By now, Nara starts worshipping Lord Shiva & Narayana fights with him for 1000 years thus breaking his another armour & killing himself in the process. This way they both broke Dambodbhava’s 999 golden armours.

Each time one brother died, the other brought him to life by chanting Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra in his ears (Given to them by Lord Shiva).

After realising that both these brothers are one in two human bodies, Sahasrakavacha finally concludes that he can never defeat Nara & Narayana. He runs to Lord Surya who gave him this boon & requests the Sun God to protect him from both of these sages

Narayana requests Lord Surya to hand over this demon to them but he refuses claiming that this demon is my devotee

Angered by Surya’s response, Narayana curses Lord Surya & this demon together to be born as one human in the next life on earth & pay for all the sins which the entire humanity suffered because of this boon.

By that time, treta yuga is about to end & Duapar Yuga is about to begin; so Nara & Narayana are reborn as Arjuna & Krishna; Dambodbhava is born as Karna wearing the last remaining Golden armour & a pair of Golden earings.

Since he was a demon in his past life, he suffers insults throughout his life from Women, Sages & Warriors alike(whom he humiliated & killed mercilessly in past life).
