After 1947 we were always close to USSR due to Nehru's love for socialism
Still after 1962 China war n subsequent nuke test by China in 1964, Indo-US joined hands to keep a watch on China
It was decided to keep watch on Chinese nuke site in Xinjiang
Accordingly nuclear powered sensitive devices picking up radiation traces were decided to be placed on peak of Nanda Devi in Garhwal Himalayas in 1965
As per plan special mountaineering team comprising of IB n CIA officials went for the mission
Local Sherpas were hired to carry these devices on mountain summit
Enroute the journey terrible blizzard forced the team to abandon the devices n return
After weather condition normalized the joint Indo US team went to pick up the devices n place it at designated location
The team was shocked as they couldn't trace the nuclear powered device consisting of 7 plutonium capsules
They dig up the whole area fearing buried under snowfall but couldn't find it
The news of missing plutonium n fear of radioactive contamination of Himalayan glaciers, the source of many important rivers of India sent shockwaves in establishment
From 1965-68 lot of special teams were dispatched to trace the plutonium capsules
Matter became more serious when dozen of Sherpa's who carried the device on their shoulders were detected with cancer due to radiation
Plutonium quantity was 1/2 the size of Hiroshima bomb
An ITBP Battalion was stationed near Tapowan to continuously monitor the water for any radioactivity
In 1967 another device was successfully placed at Nanda Devi summit
It worked satisfactorily for a yr n then developed a snag
Team which went to attend the problem was shocked, as this device was also missing
After frantic search they found a cave at 8 ft depth. The cave was formed due to tremendous heat emanating from the device. Heat melted the snow n cave was formed
Device was brought back n then mission aborted due to heavy risk of contamination of river origins
It was a secret joint operation from agencies of Indo-US. The story first broke out in 1977 in US
Expeditions to retrieve the missing nuclear device went for decades
The Nanda Devi Battalion of ITBP went on monitoring the water for radioactivity
The area is banned for mountaineering except for army
Majority of the officers involved in the operation including US feel that the blessing of Nandi Devi saved the day for Indians
Just think Ganga, Yamuna getting contaminated with radioactive particles n people depending on it banned from drinking n using it for farming activity
From Uttarakhand to WB crores of people would have been affected
We r uniquely blessed by Devta's
