When Jay and Sunghoon entered I-LAND and sat down, Jay immediately caught my attention for his friendliness and how he spoke so well. He told the trainees that they were trustworthy people and he had this positive energy radiating all over the place.
In EP 1 he and Sunghoon performed ‘The 7th Sense.’ Their performance was acclaimed by the producers and trainees. Several KPOP fans are aware that the song itself was hard, especially because of the difficult choreography that required body control.
I’ll be talking about Jay’s performance here. He sang the parts with lower pitch, which immediately gave the impression that he can be bass-baritone. Or maybe a future rapper. His dance movements were fluid, and he had this ‘wow’ factor while he was performing.
When the producers were praising him, Bang PD’s comment about Jay’s ‘stubbornness’ became remarkable. Little did we know how accurate Bang PD’s description of Jay was. Rain even acknowledged it. Their comments were even more justified just right after EP 1.
When he successfully entered I-LAND, you can see that he was bonding with the other trainees well. He and Daniel were even talking about how they both knew how to cook. Jay was so adorable here, he too was a social butterfly.
ALSO: Because of him, the I-Landers have their very own Wake Up Fairy!
For the first test which was the Signal song, they were asked to assign each other parts. Before they gathered around and decide, Jay was shown passionately practicing even for Part 1. However during the decision-making, he did not volunteer for it.
The following scenes were heart-wrenching. Jay raised his hand for Part 2 but ultimately lost to Geonu. For Part 3, he raised his hand up again. Actually, he sang this part very well. Unfortunately, he didn’t get it again.
He raised his hand again and again in hopes of getting a good part. He even defeatedly said he’ll just take whatever’s left. He felt humiliated. He told at the interview later that it was the most humiliating moment in his life.
BUT HE DID NOT GIVE UP. Later for Part 8, he was successful. Take note, he raised his hand SEVEN TIMES. His passion resonated the most. Jay had this ‘I want it, I’ll get it’ attitude. He does not know how to stop once he has set his eyes on something.
He was brave. He wasn’t a pushover, not ashamed for wanting a good part. This is a survival show, and that quality alone of Jay will make him reach far. He was mocked by some, but joke’s on them because Jay continues to prove why he’s worthy to be on I-LAND on the next episodes.
ALSO: He slayed this freestyle. I’m really digging his way of dancing. He’s just oozing of swag, smoothness and hiphop all over.
In EP 3, Jay was eliminated and sent to the ground. He promised that he would come back to I-LAND next week. I had goosebumps the moment he went to the ground because he suddenly took initiative. He has learned a lot from their errors in I-LAND.
He led grounders because he knew he’s got what it takes. People might view this as him being egotistical, but this made me admire him more for lots of people want to debut but NOT EVERYONE has got what it takes to be responsible for the whole group.
From Part 8 to Part 1 real quick. He got that Part 1 fair and square with his mad dancing skills. When Rain visited them to check out the GROUNDERS, they had an unsatisfying performance which led Rain to scold Jay who’s the leader. They were unable to do the most important part.
But Jay took the scolding well. There was no flinch in his part, he accepted Rain’s criticisms & he kept on apologizing. This made him very well deserving of his position as GROUND’s leader. He took Rain’s constructive criticisms as an advice.
Before the performance, you can see in I-LAND cams how he gathered everyone probably to boost their confidence and improve their teamwork. At one part, Kyungmin was sick and we see Jay massaging him. You could see that he treats his members very well like a true leader.
At EP 4 during FIRE, he proved his statement that the I-LANDERS will regret voting for him. He was literally on fire throughout the performance & he affixed his center position to himself excellently. The producers were not wrong when they said Jay was holding the group together.
We didn’t see him cry in EP 4 because of Mnet’s shitty editing, but this part right here was where I wanted to just comfort & hug him. He did more than great. In just 4 episodes he has had the most growth, and he’s only 18. Jay is really something else
When he was back in I-LAND after, there was another test again. They had to choose representatives. Jay volunteered for the Dance unit. Since EP 1, you can see that Jay’s edge was street dancing. He said if he was chosen to do it then he would do well. TALK ABOUT CONFIDENCE.
When they rehearsed, Jay was astounding. Although when they zoomed in at that part where Jay did a flip, that may be the reason why he was replaced later. Nonetheless, his dancing was powerful although he did not get any comment from Rain :(
ALSO: If he doesn’t debut then who’s gonna put spoons in their fridge? T^T
Jay was disappointed when he was replaced for the dance unit. He even said, “What can I do?” (Since majority of them wanted Sunghoon) But Jay was a good sport, he did not have any issue with it. He cried because we all know how much Jay loves dancing
It’s understandable that Jay would feel upset. Dancing is really one of his edges aside from rapping (which we need to hear) and it was the second to the last test for Part 1 so it’s reasonable he wanted it badly. But he didn’t get angry and he became Sunghoon’s #1 hypeman.
In EP 5, I & CREDIBLE was introduced which was a song that had a very difficult choreography. Jay raised his hand for Part 5 for it stood out the most and had a solo moment, but he was not chosen again. But that did not stop him from working hard.
He LITERALLY was the FIRST one to learn the dance. Everyone and from my POV, found the choreography hard to memorize but he quickly learned it and was very kind enough to teach the others. He was already busy practicing on his own but he still guided those who asked for his help.
Jay is a selfless person. Antis who thought he had a big ego should be ashamed. The last test was all about their individual skills since they needed to appeal themselves to the producers and to the fans if they want to continue to Part 2. But he still helped them learn the dance
Jay wasn’t feeling confident about the global votes. I know that Jay’s potential, talent and strong personality is no joke. So if you:
- want an artist who symbolizes the passion of the youth
- want an artist who never gave up
- want an artist who’s a leader too
VOTE FOR JAY !
