My fear in the current economic/COVID-19 situation is that the public sector will be slashed
Many working from home will find offices downsized or it is simply decided they aren’t needed, and 100s of 1000s jobs will go in the departments, the supply chain and local shops etc
And areas relying on that employment will be devastated and might never recover
Look at what happened to mining areas when the pits closed
It will of course be presented as “taking out the excess” and talk will be of “backroom functions” as always
And that is the point being missed by those calling for “working from home forever”
If you are lucky enough to keep your job, the cleaners, security etc will not be so lucky and that sandwich shop on the corner won’t get the essential office trade
But I’m ‘sure’ the government won’t let that happen
Or would they?
And a cynic might say that the message would be “the public sector wages were protected, very few public sector staff were furloughed, it is only fair they now share some of the necessary pain as we rebuild”
And of course we’ve all seen the stories of ‘public sector waste” etc
And that is the end of this very upbeat message
