MIGRANT WORKERS & THEIR MISTREATMENT

-in Maldives, PoC migrant workers
(especially Bangladeshis) are oppressed
and ill treated not only by the people but by the system itself.
treatment of expatriate workers
expatriate workers in the Maldives are often subject to:
- assumptions that they are intellectually inferior despite them gaining fluency in Dhivehi in only a short period of time.
- verbal, physical and sexual abuse
- infantilization
-misrepresentation in media (parodying their manner of speech, attire etc)
- being called degrading names and slurs
moreover, migrant workers are victims to many human right violations, such as:
-inadequate pay/ nonpayment/ unwarranted deductions from wages
-human trafficking
-inadequate housing and living conditions - long working hours, with no/ insufficient breaks
illegal immigrant workers and how they get stuck
many of the illegal foreign workers are workers who have been:
-sponsored by some employer and processed by an employment agency and then been abandoned
or
-foreign workers who have come under tourist visas with the assistance of a compatriot and who have not been able to find work yet.
in most cases, foreign workers sell all their belongings in order to pay commission to employment agents. many such workers, on their arrival in the Maldives, find out that the pay is much lower and the job that was specified is not available.
such migrant workers are forced to accept the jobs available at whatever pay that is offered so that they could earn back the sum paid as commission
how we can help?
speak out! educate your family, friends and peers. discuss with figures of authority, be it the management at school or your boss at work.
most importantly, condemn and call out mistreatment and exploitative practices. don’t be passive; be active! #Payup
