I’ve received a few messages over the past couple of days regarding cancel culture and “diabetic infighting” that is “doing more harm than good”, that I’d like to address on here. We are up against the most powerful lobbying group in the United States. (1/6)
In the past we have looked to these traditional T1 nonprofits to help us navigate these types of issues. Watching them form financial partnerships with insulin manufacturers that kill type ones with high prices is, frankly, gut-wrenching. (2/6)
Our house is on fire, diabetics are running out of money, and these orgs are essentially paid to be silent. Forgive me for calling out hypocrites that are more concerned about new diabetes tech and cycling personal bests than helping those who can’t afford our medication. (3/6)
However, this is not about one person or one group. We can’t take on Pharma while also being hamstrung by advocacy groups with conflicting motives. I’ve received more support on Twitter in the past year from selfless, insulin-shipping type 1s than from any group I joined...(4/6)
...when I was younger. While I understand and appreciate how these organizations have helped many diabetics in the past, their inability to adapt to the biggest crisis facing their constituents is a disgrace.(5/6)
Critiquing Pharma ties and demanding transparency is long overdue, and still very much needed to achieve our end goal of affordable insulin. (6/6)
