This week, I’m a winner baby! Not only am I celebrating a giant maxi challenge win on #CanadasDragRace but now I can share my coming out story to my Dad with all of you! This year I finally got to tell my Dad that I’m gay and that Priyanka isn’t my girlfriend…
she is indeed my drag alter ego. As I was telling him this he kind of stared blankly into the abyss and I got so scared. I felt like I took way too long to come out to him. He’s definitely seen things on Facebook and he has to know…this shouldn’t be a surprise. My Mom was there
and said “he’s our child and no matter what we’re going to love and support him”. He nodded and said “okay, let’s go to Canadian Tire to buy paint”. I didn’t take offence to his silence. Everyone processes news differently whether or not they “knew”.
Days went on, my birthday passed, and although we never touched base about my sexuality…nothing changed. My Dad treated me the same, cooked me food whenever I’d come home and still ask me how I’m doing. I knew that it would be a bit uncomfortable for him to watch me on
Canada’s Drag Race but since the show he’s been helping my Mom prepare for her big viewing parties, cooks everyones food, pours everyones drinks and shows that he’s so happy to see me on what he calls that “rupaul” show.
There will be many conversations to have in the future to educate him about the LGBTQ2S+ community but for now he knows who is son really is and loves me no matter what.
Every parent handles this news differently and sometimes we don’t get that happy ending. I’m so lucky to have been able to share this story with you. I know many of you aren’t out but I want you to know that it takes time. It takes understanding. It takes education.
Some parents will kick you out, some parents will say they always knew, some parents will sit there in silence. But know that if your family doesn’t accept you - you have your chosen family. Those around you who make you feel comfortable and understood.
I am your family, my family with my 2 parents and 3 brothers are your family, and we are here for you <3
