I look forward to the time when time and the perspective it brings will make clear that Trump's crude, flailing demagoguery was pure id and contained not a shred of genius. He didn't crack the code. He got lucky in 2016 because of mistakes of his opponents & the help of Russia.
He is a man who is singularly without genius of any kind who has devoted his life to trying to turn his good fortune into the illusion of success only, always, every time, to be revealed for the fraud he is.
It will also be clear that the real powers in the GOP did not fall to their knees in the thrall of Trump's political mastery but rather just saw him as the flavor of the week and used him to advance their long term agenda of consolidating power for the 1%...
...by exploiting the fears and prejudices of white lower and middle class Americans, particularly the most educated, most economically vulnerable and most extremely aggrieved and racist among them. What they are doing is not Trumpism.
It could more accurately be called McConnellism as he has been the master guiding this movement on the American political stage for longer than Trump has been around. But it had a different name in the time of the neocons and the right that backed Bush.
And it had a different name when Gingrich led the way. Most accurately, perhaps we could call it Reaganism. That's the branding the big donors have ridden the longest. But in reality, it has been led from the backrooms of American politics...
...by donors and right wing organizations with much great discipline and long-term vision than their counterparts in the Democratic Party. They are up against major demographic shifts that they see as their ultimately enemy, the clock they're playing against.
It is that shift that fuels some of their most hateful rhetoric and some of their most despicable policies. But in the end, who America is will determine who are leaders are...and the new, emerging, more diverse America will ultimately have no place in it for this GOP.
This GOP is a movement struggling against inevitable change, against progress, against what is right, to try, as many political movements have to cling to a past that will never return. They are on the wrong side of history. And if that wasn't clear...
...their embrace of the Confederacy and their backing by those trying to reclaim a long gone Soviet past in Russia, makes this as clear as day. To facilitate the change, to aid history, to push them to the past, recognizes seeing them for who they are.
We must understand how disposable Trump is to them. We must understand their discipline and their long term strategy to maintain power (pushing institutional change-a "rigged" political system--backed by a compliant judiciary). And we must understand that history is on our side.
And then we must develop our own leadership, vision of what we want, commitment to transformations to undo their efforts and focus on the real needs of the US we are becoming & our own discipline to make it happen. But it all starts with opening our eyes to the truth.
