I haven't read the WaPo piece yet... but sadly, it sounds like a continuation of the disgusting garbage women in sports have always dealt with (and continue to have to).
I say that because I've heard female colleagues, editors, interns tell these same sickening stories...

Truth is, I wouldn't be where I am today without the excellent women in sports I'm lucky enough to know.
@bepryor hired me at @dailytarheel as a freshman. Then @gmraynor believed in me enough to make me an editor. And you know what? I still look up to them as writers/reporters.

I had the privilege @theobserver of learning from tremendous female colleagues: @JourdanRodrigue is as fine a beat writer as there is in the country; @agetzenberg is a rising star in the NFL world; @mwc13_3 was a superstar as an intern. And @schisenhall is THE ultimate supporter.
Now @TheAthletic I'm lucky enough to be teammates with the incomparable @DanaONeilWriter @tori_mcelhaney @SaraCivian (and can't forget @danielle_lerner, a dogged reporter and one of the most creative writers I've met). All do tremendous work, but are even better people.
And I've seen the way @lebrownlow @Sheena_Marie3 @Quierra_Luck @kfitz134 and so many others go about doing fantastic work on their beats, never caving to all the trash and denigration they have to go through. Truthfully, I know it's more than I'd be able to endure.
All of this to say, women aren't just "capable" -- and if that's how low your bar is, that's pretty f*cking sad. Women have unique, invaluable perspectives that not only should be heard, but NEED to be heard. Their voices and thoughts and stories make their coverage outstanding.
Men in sports (and men period), it's not enough anymore -- nor was it ever -- to "be better." WE ACTUALLY HAVE TO DO IT.
So call out abuse, marginalization, all of it when you see it. Speak the hell up. Don't allow your friends and colleagues to continue to be treated this way.

And also: Show female reporters love when they do great work. Share their work. Empower them to continue doing what they do. Spotlight female athletes and coaches for their on and off-court accomplishments.
It shouldn't be this hard, y'all.
