This tweet is audism, the Deaf version of racism.

To a Deaf person, the person below may as well be wearing a KKK hood.

This is disgusting and should always be called out.

This week I will see a Deaf girl who doesn't speak. She grew up in a small city and went to a regular school. Her parents wanted her to be as "normal" as possible. She learned to speak, in that school. She learned to say words without ever hearing a sound.

Others I have discussed this with, have described the horrors of trying to learn this way. It is traumatic. But she learned and learned everything else that they taught her. She became a graphic artist. And was promoted quickly from her first job.

Subordinates began to mock the way she spoke. They drew little cartoons making fun of her. These were "adults"... she quit that job, and hasn't spoken since.

Sunday I will also see a deaf man. He had a single mom. Her boyfriend abused him. Didn't want a "retard" in the house. The mother gave him away. He bounced from foster family to foster family. He was sexually abused, twice, by foster family. He actually wrote a book about it

Deaf kids, especially those who can't speak, are often the victims of sexual abuse, merely because they don't have the ability, or opportunity, to speak out.

These were members of a deaf ministry at a large church. Some of you may remember this, but there was a big split, a few years back. The deaf ministry was moved from this nice, English speaking church with all the "bells and whistles" to a Korean church.

They can barely communicate with the people they share space with, now.

Their "crime"... they wanted to be known as a "Deaf Church" rather than a ministry. They wanted to be involved in other ministries.

They wanted... to be involved in mowing the church grounds. Denied.

At my 2018 Frisco Deaf Night, many of you came out to support. One of my supporters brought their deaf father. I had met him before. Very nice man. He has been deaf since childhood. He's I dunno. Late 50's maybe early 60's. I can only imagine how hard his life was.

At the same game, a deaf girl, who had been adopted from China threw out the first pitch. She was not only deaf was born without ears, and has had to deal with numerous surgeries. But she took the mound like a champ. Confident.

Also at the game, a deaf baby, and deaf kids, already fitted with technology.

Last night, after that audist reply from the "conservative blogger"... I thought back to this game. The contrasts. The differences in age, and technology/science that are now available to the little ones.

But, as that reply shows. The attitude remains the same.

These kids, this baby, will still face the same horrible people, with the same horrible attitudes... unless we start calling these jerks out.

Many of you are probably thinking "come on, you're making this bigger than it is"...

But I am not. It's something I see almost every day.

You may remember two winters ago, I had kids working in a seasonal Christmas job... Those kids were forced to do the labor, out of sight, while their hearing friends participated in the fun work.

You may remember the man I set up in a landscaping biz, who was stiffed by a car dealership for work that he performed. The dealership claimed that he had misunderstood what they said he would pay. He didn't. But we get this, a lot.

This was from yesterday. I am talking to a Deaf girl's mom. I had been looking for a job for the girl who uses a CI. She went to hearing school. She had friends their, so she was sheltered. She was made fun of at her first job. She has isolated herself, since.

She only wants to work with animals, now. They don't judge her.

I could tell stories like this, for days. I could tell you about people who only want to work midnight shifts, so they don't see many people. I could tell you about a CPA who did the amazing work to get that license as a deaf man, but now sweeps floors to avoid people.

I could tell you about the people who choose to live on the street, sleep in our church, just to isolate from the "Hearing World"

That's how they view it. Two worlds.

And they don't feel welcome in the hearing world.
