Hey, @theJeremyVine I'm sorry I couldn't make it onto your @JeremyVineOn5 show this morning, unfortunately, it classes with some work meetings I couldn't reschedule.
I have a statement to make on my tweet which is as follows: 1/10 https://twitter.com/JeremyVineOn5/status/1284014448731193344?s=20
"As a regular road user, I see and experience a lot of different things. Sometimes I am put in danger by other people using the road. Like many thousands of road users in the country, I video record my journeys. When I'm cycling, I am often treated very differently than when 2/10
driving, people take more risks and put me in more danger, despite less protection. My reports are mostly of careless or dangerous motorists who are flagrantly breaching traffic laws and/or putting people at risk. The Police take various levels of actions on these reports 3/10
based on what is reported, this can be no action, a driving awareness course, fixed penalty notices, or taken to court. My reports have included people driving with no tire, driving with ice-covered widows, driving whilst reading a newspaper, driving whilst watching TV, 4/10
failing to stop at a zebra crossing, and going through red traffic lights. From 2018 to date my reports have resulted in £20,376 in fines, 253 penalty points issued and 35 people being sent on driving awareness courses. This is the same reporting system that Jeremy Vine uses 5/10
to report people that he witnesses on the road driving in a fashion which they shouldn’t. There have been mostly positive comments and feedback, with most understanding that road safety is a real issue and needs to be improved. A large number of people are not happy that 6/10
I am doing this and have said as much on Twitter in response to my tweet, most using playground insults such as ‘grass’. Their responses only highlight the exact issue we have with road safety. Far too many people do not take it seriously. 7/10
5 people a day die on British roads, another 70 are seriously injured. Drink driving is seen as socially unacceptable, but speeding and careless/dangerous driving are not." 8/10
I thought @theJeremyVine handled his guests and phone in opinions very well. It is disappointing that there wasn't able to be a cyclist on the show and I do know several cyclists were asked to come on, the short notice makes it a bit hard to be available. 9/10
My final comment to those reading. Do you cycle? If not, why not? Is it because you think it is too dangerous?
That is exactly what I'm trying to change!
Please all be respectful and safe on the roads. 10/10
