FOLLOW-UP ON MEETING WITH @FSUPresThrasher @hecht_amy and other FSU Administrators #EppesHasToGo #RenameDoak
To put this simply, the demands were not met. When directly asked to move the Eppes Statue off campus and rename Eppes Hall, President Thrasher said “No.”
Instead, @FSUPresThrasher had issues with how students voiced their concerns, including me, and insinuated they were disrespectful in their methods.
When I brought up his legacy and impact on Black and Brown @floridastate students his response was “I could give a damn what people think about me.” This shows how administration doesn’t understand the urgency of making FSU campus an inclusive environment for BIPOC students.
What concerned me, is that @FSUPresThrasher stated he knows black individuals who support his term as President, and used it as justification for ignoring current concerns of Black and Brown Students.
He used his actions on bringing the new @FSU_BSU House to campus as evidence that he’s done enough for Black and Brown students.
What administration has decided to do is convene a new President’s Advisory Council on Namings.
This is not what we asked for, because @FSUPresThrasher did not follow the recommendations of his own council in 2017. How can we fully trust this process, when in the past President Thrasher has ignored the recommendations of his previous advisory council?
I was appointed by @FSUPresThrasher to join this new council. However, my participation on this council is only meant to explore other racist figures on our campus. Eppes and BK Roberts were explored in depth in 2017. All Thrasher has to do is follow these recommendations.
I also handed President Thrasher 40+ letters by BIPOC @floridastate students documenting racism via @/dearfloridastate. I hope @FSUPresThrasher will listen and act on these issues, and take the first step by removing the Eppes Statue ASAP.
I am calling on all @floridastate Students and Alumni to express their disappointment on the lack of action that FSU has taken on this issue. Continue to email and call administration as well as utilizing #EppesHasToGo and explicitly supporting the removal of Eppes’ likeness.
For reference, here were my public expectations prior to the meeting, where I expressed my hopes for this meeting as well as stressing the importance of mutual respect. https://twitter.com/feacher_miles/status/1281562089119678465?s=21">https://twitter.com/feacher_m... https://twitter.com/feacher_miles/status/1281562089119678465">https://twitter.com/feacher_m...
