~A personal story, and how it relates to the reopening of schools in the U.S.~

After much begging & pleading, my sister agreed to allow her 9 year old daughter attend gymnastic practice a few weeks ago after talking to the gym to ensure that certain safeguards were in place

1/&
Last Friday one of the other girls at the gym started to feel ill, & her parents had her tested for covid. They never told the gym.

The girl started to feel better over the weekend, and so the parents allowed her to return to practice before receiving the covid test results

2/?
The test results came back on Wednesday- positive for covid-19. They informed the gym, the gym informed the parents. Now there are roughly two dozen families affected by this, who should now quarantine for 2 weeks.

3/?
Why am I telling this story?

This gym could be looked at like a mini school; one that arguably has better safeguards in place than any public school: smaller class size, are together for only short periods of time, etc.

4/?
And still an entire gym class has to self-quarantine for 2 weeks.

Yes, the parents of the ill child are mostly to blame. You'll see the same irresponsible behavior from school parents. Some percentage will neglect to take their child's temp. before putting them on the bus..

5/?
They'll send a mildly ill child to school because they can't afford to miss work. They neglect to have their sick child tested for covid for fear of a positive test result.

It's simple statistics; a small percentage of people will do what is convenient, not what is right.

6/?
In a large setting with hundreds of kids instead of a dozen, this will be magnitudes worse.

And forget about reasonable guidance from our elected officials. They have shown themselves to reject science over what is politically expedient. (At least those here in the South.)

7/?
And yes, I've heard pediatricians say that children are less likely to suffer from serious complications, are less likely to contract and/or spread the disease. But that number is not zero.

Let me say that again; the number might be lower, but IT IS NOT ZERO.

8/?
I realize that the people that are reading this thread aren't the ones who really should be reading this thread. I'm preaching to the choir, here.

9/?
So please do me a favor: If you know of any parent who is planning on sending their child/children back to school in the middle of a pandemic, have an honest and respectful conversation with them.

10/?
Ask them what is the school policy if one child or teacher in their class becomes ill.

Ask them if they have any at risk family members whose life could be in danger if their child brings the virus home.

11/?
Ask them what is the school's policy to keep the virus from coming through the doors. Is there mandatory temp screening at the entrance? Will the kids wear masks and/or social distance? Will older kids change classes at the bell like before?

12/?
I actually can't believe I'm even having to type this thread. This is information we should be getting from the highest levels of government. But they don't care about you. They only care about their reelection prospects.

So we're on our own.

12/13
Please be safe. Make good decisions. And if you see others making bad decisions, call them out.

Peace, love, and light to you all.
