“You have a great personality to be a clinician - why would you go into IR”

“So you want to go into IR... you don’t like patient contact I see”

2/several comments I have received thus far during intern year from medical and surgical attendings.

IR is a clinical specialty
If you are pursuing #IRad you should know this will be a perception that you will have to work to change.

The lack of awareness of what IR can do for patients is the greatest obstacle preventing IRs across the country from maximizing their contribution to patient care
When I received these comments I didn’t get offended. I took the time to educate these physicians that the culture of IR is going through a major change. I showed them cases posted by @CHICKVIR @SDhandMD @VenuVadlamudiMD @SriniTummala @t_intheleadcoat @IR_Doctor @AriIsaacsonMD
If you are committed to being an IR I implore you to also educate as many people as possible. Don’t let these comments slide! Let people know IRs are head to toe clinicians. Let people know we enjoy patient care. We can’t let IRs be seen as technicians - it’s unacceptable.
