An e-ballot has landed in the inboxes of members @ExeterUCU on a proposed new collective agreeement.

Please vote to reject.

This document does not merely accept management’s flexibility to implement compulsory redundancies (CRs), but specifies a date when they may do so /1
At the Branch EGM on Wednesday, members were informed the Branch leadership had been unable to gain guarantees there would be no CRs.

Such guarantees are not always possible. But that means the branch needs maximum freedom of action going forwards to defend jobs. /2
The document was only presented to members on Tuesday. An EGM was held on Wednesday, not in accordance with UCU rules or standing orders; no motions were presented and no binding vote was taken on the e-ballot, or discussion of a proposed text. /3
This is addressed to members at the University of Exeter very specifically - other branches are fighting, and are fighting hard. It is going, no exaggeration, to be a hell of a fight.

But we absolutely must fight it. /4
It is UCU’s responsibility, nationally and locally, to challenge the narratives which frame these decisions.

This simply has not happened here. This e-ballot has been rushed, and many members may not be aware of the broader context. /5
The key issue is = if you vote to accept, then there is no guarantees there won’t be CRs anyway. As stated, the document actually writes in a date when they may take place.

It isn’t a choice between this or annihilation. It’s a choice between this or fighting /6
We are living through incredibly difficult times, and union members recognise that. The sector is facing financial challenges across the board due to the crisis.

But...individual institutions are more-or-less exposed by decisions made pre-crisis. UCU needs to argue on that /7
...and if necessary do the legwork to offer an alternative plan.

That hasn’t happened at Exeter.

I know we are all tired and afraid. But this document does nothing to help us.

Exeter members, please vote to reject, vote to fight.
