Things you need to know about Reddit, a thread for confused artists
Before proceeding, I would like to remind everyone to follow the rules of each subreddit. Please do not spam even if you’re in a pinch. All artists should be given equal opportunity to promote which is why those rules are in place.
If you really need to spam, then do it on twitter. Remember that subreddits are not just ad boards. They are communities.

Also, explore. The more time you spend there, the more familiar you become.
Introduction

Reddit is similar to other forms of social media since it has functions such as posting, likes and dislikes (A.K.A. upvotes and downvotes), sharing, and more. What makes it different is that everything is categorized under subreddits.
Section 1: FAQ and general info about reddit
What’s a subreddit?

A subreddit is a community made for a topic. It’s written in the format r/[name] (e.g. r/food, r/HungryArtists). There are subreddits for everything, including nsfw. Don’t worry. As long as you don’t join those subreddits, they won’t appear on your home page.
Can I post outside a subreddit?

No, you can’t. If you want to make anime-related memes, you have to post on r/Animemes. If you want to vent about your teen problems, you have to post on r/teenagers. Each subreddit has their own rules and purpose.
What’s a redditor?

A redditor is a term used for all reddit users. Their usernames are displayed in the form of u/[name] (e.g. u/chitsaaron).
What do I need to sign up?

All you need is an email. That’s it.
What are upvotes and downvotes?

Similar to likes and dislikes. The number is the total number of upvotes minus the number of downvotes. When clicked, the upvote button looks red-orange (debatable) while the downvote button looks blue. You can vote on both posts and comments.
Do upvotes matter?

If you want your post to have more visibility when people sort by hot (the default), then yes. There are people who do sort by new and interact with those posts.
How does sorting work?

Posts can be sorted by best, hot, new, top, and rising. Best can only be found on your home page and shows an assortment of top posts from your subreddits. Hot shows recent posts with a lot of upvotes and slightly older posts with more upvotes.
(cont.)

New shows the latest posts. Top shows the posts with the most upvotes in descending order. Rising shows posts that are starting to get small traction.
What is karma?

Karma is roughly how many upvotes you get on your posts. It has no value but there are people who try to get as much of it as possible for fun. Having negative karma shows that most of your posts or comments have more downvotes than upvotes which isn’t good.
(cont.)

Also, people care waaaaay more about your individual posts rather than the account itself. There’s a follow function but there’s no real purpose to it. This is why reddit is a slightly fairer playing ground (if you disregard the biases present in certain subreddits).
What are coins?

They’re used to buy awards.
What are awards?

Awards are given by fellow redditors when your post is outstanding. It’s pretty much a clout award function. Usually, these posts have thousands of upvotes. There are three awards: silver, gold, and platinum. Gold and platinum offer reddit premium.
What are trophies?

They’re given by reddit as recognition for their contributions. They don’t affect anything.
What are flairs?

Flairs are like tags which show you what your post is about. By clicking on these flairs, you can filter posts from a subreddit that have those flairs.
Why does my view of reddit look messy/different?

There are three post layouts: card, classic, and compact. I recommend card. Also, if you click on your profile, in the drop-down menu, you can find a button saying “Visit Old Reddit” which shows you reddit in its old layout.
Section 2: A short overview of art related subreddits (please read the full rules on each subreddit, including the pinned posts by moderators)
r/HungryArtists

For comms. Minimum pricing/budget for clients and artists is $15. Can post your commission sheets once a week but you can comment on posts of potential clients as long as their budget is close to your pricing and you can provide what they ask for (e.g. portrait).
r/DrawForMe

Also for comms. Can post your commission sheets once a week. Must link your portfolio in paid offers. Read the subreddit’s full rules, especially the pinned posts.
r/commissions

Also for comms. Unfortunately, I can’t find the subreddit’s rules. I think it’s safe to follow the guidelines in r/HungryArtists and r/DrawForMe.
r/artcommissions

Also for comms. Cannot post as a company (in general, having a company reddit account is prohibited). Rules are similar to r/HungryArtists. Check their pinned posts.
r/artstore

For art stores. Also good for comms. It has lesser post requirements compared to r/DrawForMe and r/HungryArtists. There’s also useful advice on their pinned posts.
r/Art

For posting finished art. It’s a huge community.
r/painting

For traditional painting. You can ask for opinions and critiques or you can just post your paintings. The community’s pretty small but most of them are nice.
r/DigitalPainting

For digital art. Images must be linked to imgur, tumblr, or deviantart. You’re required to talk about what you struggled with while making the artwork so it’s useful for getting insight on others’ art processes and receiving helpful tips.
r/DigitalArtTutorials

For digital art tutorials. The community might be small but they’re all helpful. Usually, there aren’t a lot of posts so sorting by new and sorting by hot has barely any difference.
r/redditgetsdrawn

For drawing strangers. Redditors post pictures of themselves, their friends, or their pets and artists draw them. No, you don’t get paid. Think of it as doing personal art with a redditor as a subject. Yes, you need to do it seriously.
r/redditgetsdrawnbadly

For drawing strangers regardless of skill level. It’s r/redditgetsdrawn but friendlier.
r/ArtistLounge

For art-related discussions. No advertising. Useful for advice.
