Seeing as how I loved the first game so much, beating it a good 6-7 times (even on the hardest difficulty), platinum-ing it, and deeming it my favorite game of all time - this game was no joke. It’s been so difficult to put a finger on how I feel about this game because I share
opinions on both sides of the spectrum, with those that both love and “hate” this game.
For starters, it’s important to identify that Abby is NOT the problem in this game. Sure, at the beginning it may be a little more difficult to play as her, given what she did to Joel, but
For starters, it’s important to identify that Abby is NOT the problem in this game. Sure, at the beginning it may be a little more difficult to play as her, given what she did to Joel, but
Abby is an enjoyable character and I did sympathize with her and her losses to an extent. She is human, and the devs did a great job of humanizing her and her cause despite it being at the hands of someone we love. And given that, abbys story encapsulates what it is like to live
to live in a post-apocalyptic world. It is extremely gritty, violent, and at any point things can take a turn for the worst . This is actually one of the components that I loved and found to be very believable. Ellie is not the only person that goes through tragedy and if the dev
made me sympathize with Joel’s killer, than that in itself is good fucking writing.
Yet, I was not a big fan of how Joel and Ellie were written in this game. Joel was made out to be a villain, depicting him as a blood thirsty person. And while yes, Joel kills ALOT of people,

the beauty of that end scene in TLOU1 is that like Abby, Joel is ALSO human, and acted for selfish reasons. This also humanizes Joel. I don’t feel as if the devs game him a proper send off and portrayed him in that light simply to benefit Abby. This did not make me like abby more
As far as Ellie is concerned, her feelings toward Joel rubbed me the wrong way. She had every right to be upset at him for taking that opportunity away from her (in the first game), but truthfully told, there was no guarantee whatsoever that a vaccine would be made.
Joel ofc has every right to do what he did since he knew the odds of that happening. Given this, it made the main driving force of this game all the more tragic. Ellie is probably full of regret for handling it the way she did, and I am too since it deprived us of some classic
Joel-Ellie bonding moments.
Ellie carries that weight with her the entire game, and as the player it makes me sad seeing her dealing with this hurdle throughout.
Nevertheless, most in between moments in this game are great.

Interactions between Ellie and Dina in particular are really good. Dina complements Ellie very well and of every secondary character, I enjoyed Dina the most. She’s loyal, funny, and brings out the best in Ellie. Hell, even the Abby-Lev dynamic was pretty good despite me mostly
-not- caring for any of abby’s friends. Jesse was also good and reminded me of Joel a bit, but was a shame that he died so soon (and in a very anticlimactic way I might add). It was a shame that we did not get the same level of secondary characters as we did in the first game,
Sam/Henry, Tess, Bill, David etc. were all great. The secondary characters were not as good as tlou1.
To sum it up, while there are moments which make this game great, there are some, especially major events, which feel a little hollow or fall short.

Simply put, this game needed more Joel. I missed Joel. I found his and Ellie’s dynamic to be sorely missing. If they chose to carry out his death at the middle of the game, and had us play as Abby at the BEGINNING - detailing her journey and doing the deed— it would have made the
event and story a lot more meaningful. I think it was a mistake having Abby do this at the beginning and making this players’ first impression of her. Emotional moments in this game do not carry the same weight as they did as the first game.
It was more, depressing, tiring, but somehow enjoyable. Despite this, I do believe it was more thought provoking. I think that’s partly why I’m so captivated by this game. I don’t fully agree with how things were portrayed and written, but I can understand them.
That said, while this game is not a masterpiece it is NOT bad like many people are making it out to be. It is NOT GOT S8 or Star Wars. I wanted to hate this game the moment I started it, but came out thinking all that shit was way overblown.
Still, I think TLOU set the bar so fucking high, that it was hard for this game to reach it, but is a good game regardless. I don’t know if I’d play it anytime soon, but I would recommend it to anyone having doubts.
///// end thread.
this was mostly from a character/plot standpoint.
Gameplay, graphics, animations, combat, lighting, voice acting, cutscenes were all phenomenal.
