Great discussion here with @TurnbullMalcolm and @HerveLemahieu 1/ Turnbull gives a *very* blunt assessment of Morrison's negative globalism speech, saying it quickly became an "embarrassing absurdity" in the coronavirus era
/ Turnbull also accuses isolationists and anti-globalists of "petulance" - "just because an international body is not acting to your satisfaction, you want to pick up your toys and leave. Well maybe you are better off sticking around to make it work well"
/ Speaking of blunt assessments, Turnbull is fairly grim when he's asked if China and the US have been diminished by their handling of the #COVID19 pandemic. He says America's failure to handle the problem has been "staggering"
/ Turnbull again backs the Morrison government's push for an inquiry into the coronavirus pandemic and says China "over-reacted" when it responded furiously to Australia's call. He says China's assertive behaviour is mostly counter-productive and alienating
/ Turnbull says Trump's erratic behaviour has "discombobulated" friend and foe alike, offering China a great opportunity to position itself as a steady and dependable alternate power. But China has chosen a different path- "they may well have missed an historic opportunity"
/ Turnbull again says Australia should take more ambitious action on climate change, and agrees that the Morrison Govt's climate policies are undermining the Pacific step up. He calls it "a huge negative for us in the Pacific"
/ Turnbull (no surprise) lavishes praise on Jokowi, calling him a "great unifier" and "the hope of the side" who has defended Indonesian secularism and democracy from Islamists. But he's much more measured on Modi.
/ Turnbull is asked about the flat-lining @dfat budget. He agrees more money is needed, but says it's more important to focus on sending top quality diplomats to overseas posts: "we need to improve the quantity but also the quality (of diplomacy) … but I emphasise the quality"
