dealing with mask acne? here’s some tips to help combat it! (side note, as long as masks are needed the chances of acne are high bc it’s the perfect condition for acne, warm and moist breathe lol)
1. use a new mask every time OR wash your mask after every use!
use a gentle cleanser (like your face wash or fragrance free detergent), spray with alcohol (optional) & let dry.
2. use a thin layer of an occlusive before you put the mask on. you can use vaseline or preferably aquaphor or cerave healing ointment & no these don’t clog pores!!
maskne is a type of acne caused by friction. forming a barrier between the skin and mask will help reduce irritation, inflammation, and pain.
3. focus on repairing & hydrating the skin. don’t focus on the acne. acne can’t heal if the skin isn’t in prime condition.
use a gentle cleanser, use a hydrating/calming serum, and lightweight moisturizer and spf. reducing inflammation and irritation is the first step in healing acne!
4. don’t over wash your face. it’s not helping!
5. NO MAKEUP! no one can see under the mask anyways. keep it off.
6. avoid exfoliation. NO SCRUBBING. so no face scrubs, no exfoliating beads, no exfoliating serums, no ordinary peel.
what you CAN do is 2 nights a week use an active cleanser in a low % (an acne cleanser at 2% for example)
weekly sulfur treatments
occasional spot treatments on larger lesions. pimple patches under the mask!! these are your bff for whiteheads and cysts.
7. avoid touching your face
8. clean pillowcases weekly
9. ice for a few minutes a day to reduce inflammation & combat heat from the mask!
