Jharkhand Jaguars (JJ)
NAXAL HUNTERS (PART 1)

Estb - 19 Feb 2008
HQ - STF Dhurva, Ranchi

Unlike Army & CAPF, JJ is not deployed on Battalion or Company strength. They are deployed in teams called Assault Group (AG). 1 AG has 35-40 Cdos and some even have less than 30 men.
•Sanctioned strength - 40 AGs
•Current Strength - 40 AGs (1500 personnel). Each AG is headed by a DySP and has 2 sections (Assualt Sec and Admi Sec).
•Personnel are recruited from civil pol & armed reserves, serve in JJ till they turn 30 and then go back to their parent unit
•AGs are also commanded by CAPF personnel who are on deputation to JJ.
•There are currently 6 Bomb Disposal teams with 6 personnel (1 SI, 2 ASI & 3 CT) & 120 personnel in mortar squad.
•AGs are attached to Disct SP as per requirements and Disct SP coordinates the ops
• JJ's admin in looked after IG STF → DIG STF → SP STF.
• Training is carried out at CIJWS Netarhat, STF HQ Ranchi, NSG Manser, Greyhounds Hyd, Assam Rifles CIJWS and CIJWS Mizoram. JJ personnel have also been sent to US for bomb & IED disposal tactics.
WEAPONS - One of the police first dept to induct X-95, Sig Sauer 553, Steyr SSG69 & Sig P226 & P220 pistols.
Other weapons include - ARM1F, INSAS LMG, SLR.
Note - Only AG leaders (DySP), Assnt Leader (Inspector) and Section Leader (Havaldar) are issued with Sig 553.
JJ is also one of the only fee police units to have Mahindra's (MPV-I). Currently there are 6 of them. Apart from these, JJ also used Mahindra's Rakshak, BP Gypsies and OFB's MPV.
This was the initially planned structure of a JJ AG. I was supposed to have around 70 personnel, grim reality is different as the force faces manpower shortages and usually has 35-40 personnel in on AG contrary to 70.
This is by far the rarest pic one can come across of JH police. US Army personnel came to Jharkhand to teach jungle Warfare tactics and IED Disposal
JJ AGs rotates and are not deployed permanently to one district. They are attached and detached as per operational requirements.

In the next edition of NAXAL HUNTERS we'll look at the crème de la crème, Greyhound Commandos
From personal patch collection, Jharkhand Police Regular badge (left sleeve) and JJ STF patch (Right Sleeve). Guys at @PUMA won't be happy after seeing this 😆
