from here on out i’ll be Actually talking about rivals. to start, WHAT DOES “we were... something” MEAN SEIJI KATAYAMA
so... thread: seiji and his relationship with jesse coste
this exchange had me reeling, particularly “you belong with me.” it’s such a bold statement for a teenager to make about a potential teammate (not to mention it reminds me of taylor swift’s teen love song of the same name)
so jesse probably makes dramatic statements like that and gets away with it cause he’s Jesse Freakin Coste or whatever. but then there’s these pages:
here is where im just making shit up as i go, but all we know is that seiji and jesse met as children, and have probably been fencing against each other ever since. there might be more to it, or as seiji so nicely put it, “something.”
perhaps jesse had used vaguely romantic lines to discuss their rivalry or his desire to be seiji’s teammate. and maybe seiji might have developed “the wrong idea” about their Something, like thought jesse wanted to be with him or liked him as more than a fencer.
also here’s a thought: why DID seiji choose king’s row? if seiji really didn’t want to fence with the best at exton because he wanted to go up against jesse, there’s other, better, fencing schools that would have allowed them to face off.
my guess to answer that question is that seiji originally planned to go to exton, and king’s row was a last minute choice. i think seiji liked jesse but was rejected or brushed off, and he didn’t want to see jesse at school.
(there are seiji’s own issues with expecting victory and the pressure he puts on himself that‘d put him in a position to just not like jesse. but if they’ve been fencing for years, and jesse has always been at the top, wouldn’t seiji have been accustomed to losing to jesse?
so i think there’s more than just a rivalry that kept him from exton.)
in conclusion: i would like to know what “something” means and what seiji had the wrong idea about, but it’s definitely not just about fencing. also i will be very excited if im right about anything in this thread
