Indie rock is a small community and everyone crosses paths eventually. It’s fun to play bingo with almost any old flier like this, looking for connections. “Saw them on that tour” bingo is easy, “played a show with them or knew the drummer” bingo is harder: (thread) https://twitter.com/BNastanovich/status/1283847909033771018
At this time I was drinking buddies with Lenny, drummer of Juned. We were Seattle rock friends; if we saw each other during the day we’d cross the street to stand and shoot the shit for a minute. I had no idea Juned toured with Dinosaur Jr. and I haven’t seen her in a long time.
1994 was the year Chris Ballew played “multi instruments” in Beck’s band. I didn’t know him then but in the years after he started @therealpusa we became good pals and we’ve shared stages and shrimp cocktails many times.
Sarah Shannon from Velocity Girl made a couple of great solo albums in the early 2000s and we played some shows together then. I was in awe of her. I saw her a couple of years ago fronting the band The Not-Its! when she called my daughter up on the stage unwittingly to dance.
Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster is a verified Twitter personality and drum journeyman. He played on the Ben Gibbard/Jay Ferrar tour for their One Fast Move album and I opened for them on that tour. Jon and I remain social acquaintances.
Doug Gillard didn’t join GBV until a few years after this show, but once he started playing with my Barsuk labelmates Nada Surf in 2010 I’ve counted him as a friend. Doug was playing in Cobra Verde and Gem at this point.
Bobby Bare, Jr. is also in GBV now. We met at the Doe Bay Festival and had a grand old time. We have an ex-girlfriend in common.
I met Scott Kannberg of Pavement/Preston School through Darius Minwalla (RIP), drummer of the Posies. Scott and I had a couple of songs lying around and actually released a Spiral Stairs/Long Winters split 7” double A-side on Mt. Fuji Records in 2010. https://www.google.com/amp/s/consequenceofsound.net/2010/09/spiral-stairs-and-long-winters-announce-joint-7/amp/
I never met anyone in Ween or Sebadoh but my best bingo on this flier from 1994 is that Dean Clean, drummer of the Dead Milkmen, listens to my podcast with Merlin Mann. He seems nice.
