did i ever tell y’all that John Wilkes Booth’s brother haunts the opera house of my birth city?? no?? well it’s story time
so John Wilkes Booth—the racist who assissinated the racist that is Abraham Lincoln—had a brother named Edwin Booth. now John and Edwin did not get along because Edwin was a Unionist whereas his brother was a Confederate. this was only the tip of the iceberg of their relationship
((also keep in mind Edwin was also most likely racist. being a Unionist doesn’t = anti-racist. but that’s not the focus of this thread))
moving on, Edwin was an actor. both he, his father, and his infamous brother were actors. from what I’ve been told (Georgia theater history lessons) Edwin was really the only one who remained in the business.
his most favorite and famous role was in Hamlet. it was from this role that he became extremely well known. upon his arrival to the Springer Opera House, he was treated like an old friend. everyone loved and adored him. so much that it’s stated that’s the reason why he haunts it
going back to his infamous brother, we all know how he shot Lincoln, yes? now here’s where fate plays it’s trick, Edwin saved Lincoln’s son—Robert—from being crushed by a train some time in 1863/1864. this happened only a few months before Robert’s father was assassinated.
weird right? moving on
so Edwin was pissed that his brother assassinated Lincoln because blah blah blah. he disowned his brother and stepped away from theater for a while. he even made a petition to dear old Andrew Johnson the racist to get his brother’s remains so he could bury them
keep in mind he still disowned his brother after John’s death. he was not letting that go. said he had never been disgraced like that before. you messed up John
back to acting: like I said, Edwin was famous for his role of Hamlet!! like FAMOUS famous. skip forward, he dies, and now he haunts the place right? because again the people of Georgia treated him like a king at the opera house he loved that place
it’s said that he’ll tap on ppl’s shoulders and play tricks on them. apparently he also has a thing for the actresses there too. if they’re looking for something he would drop it near them and is known to haunt the women more because he’s “taken a liking to them”
imagine a ghost hitting on you i—
anyways that concludes my lil history thread. this wasn’t done to persuade anyone or to absolve anyone of racism. i just think it’s funny how Lincoln’s assassin’s brother is a known ghost of my hometown. i think it’s kinda funny

((also he trapped my brother in the bathroom one time when he visited. see what happens when you bully me? ghosts bully you))
also everything i said is basically summed up from knowledge of the theater itself and this article: https://seeksghosts.blogspot.com/2012/03/haunted-springer-opera-house.html?m=1
